Sarteneja Alliance for Conservation and Development (SACD) wants to congratulate one of its very own board member – Mr. Leobihildo Tamai, winner of the fisher of the year award 2017.
This is an annual event organized by Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), which recognizes the importance and great work of fishers in Belize.
Biography SummaryMr. Tamai currently resides in the Village of Sarteneja and is a proud father of 6 daughters. As many of his age, Mr. Tamai entered into fishing at the age of 12 and has continued fishing for over 30 years – currently using the Glovers Reef area as his
primary fishing ground. He was very fundamental in the creation of the Sartneja Fishermen Association (SFA) and is also an ac
tive member of the Glover’s Reef Advisory Committee (GRAC); and a pioneer of Managed Access in Belize. Along with Mr. Cesar Munoz, the chair of the SFA, Mr. Tamai has also supported the promotion of loin fish extraction and consumption for the wellbeing of our fishery resources. Mr. Tamai is also currently serving on the SACD board as the representative of the Sarteneja Village, one of the biggest fishing communities in Belize and where he actively supports the management and sustainable use of the Corozal Bay Wildlife Sanctuary – an important fish nursery for many commercial fish species in Belize. To add, Mr. Tamai also serves in other protected areas advisory committees, passionately supporting sustainable fisheries at local and national levels.
